BBC License Fee Debate on Century FM - Tuesday 24th February 2004
Just got off the phone with Century FM Manchester. They came across my essay on the BBC license fee and asked me to take part in a pre-recorded debate which is being aired tomorrow, Wednesday 25th February all day. I kind of stumbled over some of my words and missed out a lot of important points I’d have liked to have made, but generally did a fairly good job of putting forward some of the problems I have with the fee (they wanted me to focus on opposition rather than proposition arguments to balance the debate). Generally though, I’m in agreement with it, but in the future Internet (P2P) TV etc. will make the BBC practically redundant. Its just a matter of time.

I’m tired of the BBC whinging about not getting the money they needed, well here are a few money saving tips. Stop making those annoying parts between the programs, the one with people doing the tango, others are dancing in wheelchairs, kids on skateboards, we are sick of seeing them and they get longer and longer, I’m sure if they get any longer we may as well just suffer the awful advertsing like we do over on 3, 4 & 5. These things must cost a fortune. They could also cut down on some of the crazy salaries the presenters get, pay them the average UK salary, their jobs aren’t as important as the roles of anyone else within society. If they don’t like it, get rid of them and introduce new talent at a cheaper price. Stop grumbling, I hate how I have to pay a license anyway. To some nations that seems ridiculous in itself. Its now 2007, I should be able to opt out and just watch the free channels if I choose to. BBC - Big Brother Channel. Making you pay although you don’t want it.
If you only have the 5 channels in the UK, do you know at anyone time you are lucky if more than 2 of them are showing anything, other than weather, news, links or advertisements. Really in this country we still have only 2 or 3 channels. Every time I turn on the TV, it is just trying to sell me crap I don’t need or showing me what is going to be on in the future. TV - Its an idiots lantern. Those people that compete to buy the largest flat screens are missing the point, it doesn’t matter how big the screen is, there is still nothing on it!!! Anyway just buy a cheapo portable and sit closer to it, if you sit with your nose only 4 inches from the screen its like being at the cinema. Thick t**ts!!!
